"Which is the richest country in the world?" — the question sounds simple, but the right answer depends on how wealth is measured. Look at total income and the answer is one country; look at the average income of each citizen and it is another. Here it is in simple words.

Measure 1: total GDP — the biggest economy

The total value of all the goods and services a country produces in a year is its GDP (gross domestic product). On this measure the United States has long been first and China second. But a big economy does not mean every person there is rich — for that you also have to look at the population. For a full picture of GDP, read The world's largest economies.

Measure 2: income per person — real "wealth"

Dividing a country's total GDP by its population gives GDP per capita. This is the measure usually used for "the richest country". In International Monetary Fund (IMF) data, the small European country of Luxembourg has been first on this measure for years. The countries at the top usually include:

CountryMain source of wealth
LuxembourgBanking and financial services; a small population, plus workers who commute in daily from neighbouring countries
IrelandThe headquarters of big international tech and pharmaceutical companies
SwitzerlandBanking, pharmaceuticals, watches and high technology
SingaporeTrade, its port and its financial centre
Norway, QatarIncome from oil and gas

On the purchasing power parity (PPP) measure — which takes local prices into account — countries such as Singapore, Luxembourg, Ireland and Qatar come out on top. Rankings shift a little every year, so check the IMF's report, published every April and October, for the latest order.

Did you know? Norway's government investment fund, where its oil income is saved, is the largest government fund in the world. Its value works out to crores of rupees for every citizen of the country.

Measure 3: human development — beyond money

Money is not the only kind of wealth. The United Nations Development Programme's (UNDP) Human Development Index (HDI) looks at people's life expectancy and education as well as income. Countries such as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland usually top this index. Many economists believe a country's real wealth lies in how healthy, educated and safe its people are, and how fairly its income is shared.

Where does India stand?

By total GDP, India is among the world's largest economies and is growing fast. But because its population is so large, India's income per person is still low — about $2,900 a year by the IMF's 2025 estimate, well below the world average. That is why India is described as "a big economy, but a developing country". Raising income per person — through better education, jobs and productivity — is India's biggest economic challenge.
