Lion vs tiger: the differences between India's two big cats
Prides versus a solitary life, manes versus stripes, Gir versus the tiger reserves — and why India is the only country with both lions and tigers in the wild.

Children often ask — who is the king of the jungle, the lion or the tiger? Both are the biggest members of the cat family, and both are found in India. In fact, India is the only country in the world where both lions and tigers live in the wild. Here the differences between a lion and a tiger are explained one by one.
The differences at a glance
| Item | Lion | Tiger |

| How to tell | The male has a thick mane round its neck | Black stripes on an orange body |
| Way of life | In groups (prides) | Mostly alone |

| Where in India | Only the Gir area of Gujarat | Forests in about 20 states |
| Water | Usually avoids it | A good swimmer that likes water |
Which is bigger and stronger?
On average the tiger is bigger and heavier than the lion. A male Bengal tiger can weigh about 200–250 kilos, while a male Asiatic lion usually weighs 160–190 kilos. The biggest tiger subspecies is the Amur (Siberian) tiger of Russia and East Asia. Lions hunt together in groups, while a tiger hunts alone by ambush. Questions like "who would win" mean little in the wild — the two usually live in different areas and never meet.
Did you know? Every tiger's stripes are different, like human fingerprints. In tiger counts, individual tigers are identified by matching their stripes in camera-trap photos. Even a tiger's skin is striped, not just its fur.
The lion: life in a pride
The lion is the only member of the cat family that lives in groups. A pride has several females, their cubs and one or two males. Most of the hunting is done by the females, while the males defend the territory. A lion's roar can be heard up to 8 kilometres away. The mane makes the male look bigger and grander and protects its neck in fights.
How both are doing in India
- The Asiatic lion: once spread from the Middle East across much of India, it survives today only in Gir and nearby areas of Gujarat. The 2025 count put its number at about 891 — up from 2020.
- The tiger: the 2022 count found an average of 3,682 tigers in India — about three-quarters of the world's wild tigers. "Project Tiger" began in 1973.
- The tiger is India's national animal, while the lion is on the national emblem (the lion capital of Sarnath) — read National symbols of India.
- "International Tiger Day" is on 29 July and "World Lion Day" on 10 August.
Ligers and tigons
In zoos, lions and tigers have sometimes been bred together — a lion father and a tigress mother give a "liger", and a tiger father and a lioness mother give a "tigon". Such animals are not found in the wild, because there the two live in separate areas. Experts do not approve of such breeding, as these animals often have health problems.
